Beta-blockers

Adrenaline and noradrenaline bind to beta-receptors, and so increase heart rate, strengthen the heart’s contraction, narrow some blood vessels and stimulate renin release. In turn, renin converts a relatively inactive precursor into angiotensin I (Figure 6). Beta-blockers (beta-adrenergic receptor blockers) prevent adrenaline and noradrenaline from binding to this receptor. Overall, taken after a heart attack beta-blockers reduce total mortality, non-fatal MIs and sudden death by approximately 20 to 30 per cent. Beta-blockers are especially effective in people at high risk of another MI.
