Chapter Twenty-Six

Making preparations went far more slowly than Dax had anticipated.

“You have to push him on this,” Rochelle said at one point. It was early morning, and they had spent the night talking about what it might look like as they journeyed, neither of them really having much of a plan in place. They’d both agreed that they needed an answer, and that before they departed, they had to be ready for anything that they might encounter. Neither of them really knew what that was going to look like, though.

“I’m not so sure that we have to push him. Even if we do, I’m not so sure that he will have any answers.”

“Well she doesn’t have any answers,” Rochelle said.

They had gone to Agatasha to try to understand more about what she wanted, but she’d been gone. It was locked and he didn’t detect any of her essence, though Dax wondered if he even could. She seemed to have some way of concealing her presence.

“We need to know what we are getting ourselves into. That’s the other part of the preparation.”

“Then we go to his office,” she said. When he started to object, she raised a hand, cutting him off. “This is important, Dax. We need to know more about what he wants from us, and we have to be ready for it.”

“I get it,” he said. “I’m just saying…” He took a deep breath, letting out slowly, before shaking his head.

“Would you rather just go back home during the break?”

Dax shook his head. Dax had given it some thought, especially with what his sister was doing about the silk shatter queen but had decided against it. He could send word to his mother, but he doubted that she would respond. Which meant getting answers from Desmond before they left.

It had taken a bit of navigating to try to get past the pair of guards that now stood on either side of the administrative building, but Dax and Rochelle were known entities, so they were permitted access. He had hurried to the headmaster’s office, knocking and waiting, thinking that if nothing else that he might feel something from inside, some hint of essence that would alert him of what Desmond was doing, if anything, but unfortunately even as he had stood there, he had not detected much of anything. Desmond might be there, but if he was, Dax did not detect anything from him.

“Do we wait?”

“How long do we give him?” Dax asked, glancing along the hallway. There had been a time when he had felt comfortable here, but that was no longer the case. “We have another way of going to him, though I don’t know if we can get his attention.”

The door at the end of the hall opened, and Professor Masson stepped out. She was one of the metallurgy instructors, but she had taken on a different role ever since Desmond had ascended to the headmaster responsibility. Now she served as an assistant headmaster, of sorts. She looked at them, frowning.
