To say I trudged down to my morning meeting with the council would do a dis-service to anyone who had ever trudged anywhere before. I am sure they languished their trip as much as I did, but I literally had to drag myself down the stairs. The enthusiasm that Gwen had about the council’s presence here in our coven was not something I shared. Not that we shared a lot between us. I assumed it was in the same room as my previous meetings, and also the scene of the last night’s entertainment, which Jean interfered with, leaving me with a bad taste in my mouth.

The room looked much the same as it did last night sans the layer of fog that hung just above the floor. Without anyone telling me to do so, not that there was anyone else there, I moved to the center of the room and waited, expecting the council members to appear from the shadows as they did before. The wait gave me a moment to put my plan together to get those cherubs, and I think they knew it. Two of them appeared horrified while the other one appeared to give me the middle-finger. “No. Not at all.”

“Good, before we departed, we wanted to check to see if you had remembered anything of interest recently.” She strode around me, dragging her black cape behind her. “I understand you had a little breakthrough.”

“Yes ma’am. I did.”

She stopped and turned on her heel right in front of me. “Well then child, tell us what you recall about the Nortons and what they were preparing you for.” Her icy blue eyes could have cut steel.

“They prepared me for many things, but not in the way you are thinking. It was a loving family environment, and they taught me about the world and how to live in it. Much in the same way I am being taught here, and…” I raised my voice, which caused her brow to respond in kind. “The same way Mrs. Paulette and Mr. French and Mr. Alva taught me in the Orleans’ Coven. You might say, they were grooming me to be the best witch I could be, maybe even a powerful one.” I opened my eyes wide so she could see the full black orbs glaring back at her.

She was not amused. “Tsk. Tsk,” she moved around me again. “I
