On the San Diego Freeway, in six lanes of stopped traffic near LAX, I’m still thinking of worse things I could have said to Jane. The air is a sunny white mélange of coastal haze and smog.

Dave’s fidgety, bouncing his knees. He looks at his watch. I glance at the dashboard clock—it’s quarter past four. His plane leaves at six.

“Don’t worry, cowboy. You’ll make it.”

“I know.”

Traffic starts moving. I keep my eyes on the brake lights of the car ahead.

“Are you planning to see Ian over the weekend?” Dave asks.

“I hadn’t thought of it.”

“I wish you were coming with me.”

“So do I.”

I hear the lie in my voice and hope he doesn’t. I want Dave, and I want him to want me, but I want Ian, too.
