Chapter VII
Towards the Rùmet-Har pass
Afew miles farther from the peak of DÃ l-GÃ larion, two figures proceeded silently in the night, one ahead, the other slightly behind, guided in the countryside only by the cold moonlight. Wrapped up in dark cloaks, they hid their features, mingling easily in the darkness. They looked like shadows as they moved quickly from field to field, at a distance from the farmhouses of the peasants, visible only for the pale reverberation of the walls and the yellow-vivid dots of the windows. It was cold, an annoying November cold that easily passed through the light clothes they wore and crept into their bones.
"Telga's house is the one you see over there..." Nòrys said, raising his fur hat a little since it had fallen down on his eyes a bit. "The most isolated, right on the edge of the woods. We will ask for her hospitality."
"Can we trust her?" Giada asked, heartily.
"When you talk about Dwarves, these questions should not be asked," Nòrys replied, stepping over the intermediate shaft of a high fence. "A She-Dwarf as good as gold anyway, I have known her since the first days I came to live Nymor. She was already there even before me. She is a merchant and sells well around here. She will have everything useful for us."
"Does Sìgrin no longer speak?" Giada asked, even more worried.
"She sleeps," Nòrys answered wryly, entering Telga's estate.
"Lucky Sìgrin... but there will be dogs? If this were the case, they might find us or even worse, bite us," Giada said.
"She's got one, but he's always asleep as well," Nòrys answered. "You must know that to us Dwarves the dog serves only as a sentinel. We prefer to watch our things on our own: it's safer."
Giada shook her head very perplexed and continued following him until they were on the threshold of the house, the one that looked back, well-darkened by the branches of a group of massive firs. Nòrys knocked the wrought-iron door with a clenched fist and waited.
"It looks like the door of a castle..." Giada said, amazed.
"Precautions, just right precautions," Nòrys cut short, shaking a hand.
"Who is it?" a harsh voice from within growled.
"Agk-bákior dorò Rùthenor!" Nòrys exclaimed proudly.
Seven locks screeched and unlocked, and the door opened, flooding the courtyard with light, and the warmth of the hearth enveloped them together with the bright smile of Telga, a young and perky She-Dwarf, with a smooth, well-groomed face and black hair tied in braids and held together by a lilac cloth bandana. "Nòrys?!" she shouted, grabbing his face in her hands and kissing him loudly on his bearded cheeks. Behind her, a big furry dog was jumping and barking, a real mass of curly white wool. "Shut up Peel!" she thundered to the dog, that whimpered quickly under the table. "Nòrys!" she repeated, spreading her arms in disbelief. "But where are you going around at this time of night? So far from home then! It's not like Dwarves!" and, standing on tiptoes, she peered behind him.
