Chapter 4
The chicken was delicious. Ellis pointed at it with his fork and moaned appreciatively with his mouth full. He swallowed too soon and winced as it went down. âThis is amazing.â
Dax, who sat across from him, looked away, almost embarrassed. âItâs nothing.â
âIt sure is. Best Iâve had in ages.â He took another mouthful. âDo you want some wine? I brought wine.â He paused with his fork halfway to his mouth, heaped with more chicken. âDo you think Iâll be able to drive back tonight?â
Dax shook his head. âAccording to the weather report, itâs gonna snow like this until about three in the morning.â
âI need to be in Whiteport at six tomorrow morning. Or seven if I go straight to work.â He looked down at himself. He couldnât work in jeans and a knit sweater, but it wouldnât take more than a minute to rush up to his apartment and grab work clothes. âPlease say it will be possible. I really, really donât want to call Jenna. She has to have some time off.â
Dax rubbed his neck and looked into his eyes. For a moment, Ellis forgot how to breathe. Dax was hotâbig and rugged. Ellis wanted to crawl up on his lap and do dirty things to him. He wanted those big hands all over his body. Swallowing a groan, he put more food into his mouth. âThis is seriously good. You should be a chef.â
A light blush painted Daxâs cheek, and Ellis grinned.
âIf youâre lucky, they will have cleared the road in the morning, but I canât guarantee it. They focus on the town and the big roads.â
âIf I could get to the highway, I could get back to Whiteport?â
Dax shrugged. âIt depends on the weather.â
Nodding, Ellis took another bite. âIâm gonna pretend as if itâs guaranteed and not call Jenna.â
Dax looked pained, which had Ellis laughing.
âWeâll wait and see. Donât you have anyone else you could call?â
Ellis took another bite before getting to his feet. Since he wasnât driving for at least a few hours, heâd have a glass of wine. The lemon chicken deserved some wine. He grabbed the bag with the bottles from the hallway and placed them on the kitchen table. âI could call Bianca. She can open the shop if Iâm not there on time, but she doesnât work in the kitchen. Though, perhaps there wonât be many customers in this weather, so sheâd get by on what we have until I can get there.â
He walked around the table toward the cupboards. âDo you want a glass?â He put a hand on Daxâs shoulder, and he jumped at the touch, then slumped as if to escape the touch.
âAhâ¦ehâ¦yeah, sure.â
Ellis gave his shoulder a light squeeze before removing his hand and grabbing two glasses from the cupboard. He found them on his second try.
âRed or white?â He held up the bottles to Dax. âOr do you want a beer instead? I haveââ
âWineâs fine. You pick.â
âWeâll go with white then. I think it goes best with the chicken.
