Chapter 9

Wherefore, brethren, seek not to counsel the Lord, but to take counsel from his hand. For behold, ye yourselves know that he counseleth in wisdom, and in justice, and in great mercy, over all his works.

Jacob 4:10

Kai dropped the bag with the assassin’s discarded clothes onto Benijah’s desk in the command tent.

“The clothes of Pahoran’s assassin,” he announced.

Benijah, sitting in his chair, raised his eyebrows as he opened the bag and began to extract the contents. At the breeches he paused, then set them aside and took out the cloak. He looked up at Kai, his eyes wide. “This is what the assassin was wearing.”

Kai hadn’t seen the detailed reports, but from what he had heard, he had already been certain. It couldn’t be a coincidence.

“This might give us a lead, but I’m not sure,” continued Benijah, sounding excited. “Someone either sold these or had them stolen, and we can begin to make inquiries.”

“Yes, but I think I have something better. I found the bag hidden in a canal near a small garden. The house probably belongs to a friend of Arayah’s father, Nahom, who is part of Imrahiel’s group. The name of the owner of the house is Hadrim, but he doesn’t live there. Perhaps the city records will show where he lives.”

Benijah stood up, his face cast in wonderment. “How did you get this information?”

Kai shook his head. “I don’t really know. Well, I do, but I can’t explain it. I wore a disguise into the city. Ara still recognized me. I hadn’t been looking for her. She wanted to talk, and she led us to this garden. Then we heard some men talking about getting law officers to check out a vagrant—which was me, of course—and we got out of there.”

Benijah was still taking that in when Kai added, “I have other news, too. Our agent in the Old Warehouse District—the one who often relays messages—I think he was attacked today, maybe killed. I caught a glimpse of the attacker, but I wasn’t sure what to do. I’m sorry about that. He was fast, but maybe I could have caught him. I’ve seen him before, by the way, at Nahom’s house. Did you get any reports?”

Benijah looked both thoughtful and concerned as he resumed his seat. “You somehow stumbled upon that mess as well? At the right time?”

Kai still felt a little stunned by the coincidence himself. But surely Benijah didn’t suspect he was involved in any way . . . did he?

“I was in the area for more than an hour, sir, listening and looking for anything that might be off, any rumor I could trace. And then . . . well, it happened.”

Benijah nodded, leaning back with his hands behind his head, eyes scanning the roof of the tent.

“And there’s more, sir, though I’m not sure how to verify it.”

Benijah’s eyebrows nearly reached that roof as he straightened, lowering his hands. “In the same day you returned from Gideon?”

Kai could understand his hesitation, but he was becoming annoyed by the captain’s disbelief.
