Chapter 10

The more he saw her, the more he wanted to see her. Her effect on him was magical. The grim hospital atmosphere seemed more tolerable whenever he thought of her. The quickness with which she lifted his spirits surprised him. He had had girlfriends before, and dated dozens of the hospital nurses. But those relationships had always been loose and casual. If he had to choose between staying with a patient and going out to dinner, he usually chose the patient. His work was more important. But now, he couldn’t wait for the workday to end.

He thought the feeling was reciprocal. At least, he hoped it was. He managed to see Michelle at least every other day. She was gay and carefree in his presence. She seemed much more relaxed than when they had first met at the track. Her fears and apprehensions were largely gone. She was back at work, fully engrossed in her job. The strange thoughts and visions that had plagued her before seemed to have disappeared. It was because of this that she had temporarily postponed her sessions with Dr. Bender.

It was hard to maintain professional objectivity, to remain uninvolved. Being close to her didn’t help. Michelle had the most endearing habit of unexpectedly touching him. While he was talking, she would cock her head and listen; and then, for no apparent reason, she would reach out, and her fingertips would graze his cheek. He would stop talking, overcome by the intimacy of the gesture, a little embarrassed by it. But when he continued, what she had done seemed the most natural thing in the world.

They didn’t talk much about Michelle’s first conversation at the coffee shop. Her confessional episode over, and her strange thoughts and dreams too infrequent to consider a problem, there seemed to be no reason to bring the subject up again. Michelle was happy with her work, Erikson content with his. They spent more and more time together. Michelle resumed running, and even talked of returning to competition. Erikson joined her at the track, running occasionally, but more often just watching. He could watch her for hours and never tire of being a spectator. She was a joy to behold, a superb athlete who was utterly feminine at the same time. She ran with fluid grace, seeming more like an ice skater than a sprinter. He enjoyed watching her liquid figure most of all. From a distance, she was all curves and softness, like flowing chiffon. Up close, she was firm and tight, but with no trace of the bulging calves or muscular arms that distorted the bodies of other female athletes. Erikson would just lean back, fix his gaze on her sleek legs, and smile.

He was confused by his feelings. He truly liked this woman—loved her, he thought—and yet he was acting out of character. With anyone else, he would try to leap into the sack the first chance he got. But for some reason, not with her. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to; it was more as if his feelings were sabotaging his libido.
