He was convincing enough when I confronted him earlier but that doesn’t mean he didn’t send it. It could just be that he’s a good liar.

But if he did send it, why? If he really wants to cleanse his soul, as he’s stated, it could be a way of forcing my hand. Trying to make me go to the police and confess my sins. Or, as I’m beginning to suspect more and more, is this him forcing my hand another way?

To say Dan is down on his luck would be a massive understatement. Are all these things – him coming back here, his apparent desire to own up to what we did, and now this threatening note – an elaborate way of getting money out of me? Is it his plan to blackmail me, make me pay for his silence?

I reach for the recent bank and credit card statements and glance over them. A sharp sneer curls my lip. I have a couple of thousand saved in another account that was supposed to be for a rainy day, and I guess they don’t get much rainier than this. But that’s only going to take us so far. I screw the statements up into a ball and aim it at the waste bin in the corner. If I get it in, then everything will be all right, I tell myself. Holding my breath I make the throw, not daring to move as the ball arcs through the air. It hits the rim of the bin and looks as if it might fall in but then hits the rim again on its second descent and bounces off onto the carpet. Missed. I let my shoulders sag. What did I expect? I place my head on the desk and close my eyes.

If Dan wants me to buy his silence, he might as well start talking to the police right now. Because I don’t have any money to give him.

Give it another six months, I won’t even have a restaurant.
