Chapter Five: Discovery

I was exhausted. The interview lasted for three hours. The agents had hundreds of questions for me, all of which were supposedly rudimentary. Finally, Mann and Stone smiled, closed their notepads, and clicked their pens closed before replacing them in their front pockets. As one, they stood and shook my hand. I stood up as well.

“All done, and don’t worry, Dr. Caño. All this was to satisfy the immigration process, but your status isn’t going to change as far as we’re concerned. We’ll make sure to give our highest recommendations for your non-revocation. You’ll be getting an email to confirm this within a few days,” Mann said, shaking my hand before letting it go so Stone could shake my hand as well.

I thanked them for their time and sat down while Letty led the two men out of the conference room.

“How’re you feeling? Any dizziness?” Miles asked softly from beside me.

“No, I’m okay. Just tired.” I shook my head and sat back against the back of the sofa.

Miles gently patted my hand. Letty came back, pushing a cart in front of her. The tray on wheels held coffee, orange juice, and some sandwiches. Where they came from, I had no idea, but I gratefully drank down some cold juice. My throat felt dry and scratchy from answering all the questions thrown at me. I considered the choice of sandwiches, took one, and quietly ate it. I had no wish to speak, so just listened as the others around me spoke of mundane things.

A few minutes later, Stanley cleared his throat. I’d gotten used to his presence by now so was a little more comfortable.

“First, Jamie, I’m sorry the first time we meet face to face had to happen under these circumstances. When you sent us word on your dad’s death, we hadn’t heard. We’ve sent some trusted people over to Morocco to investigate his death. Michael had us come down here as soon as could be arranged. We arrived just in time, too. We got word about the complaint against you, the staff, and the hospital an hour from landing. It was pure luck that we arrived before immigration got here.” Stanley was a very straightforward man. Coupled with his good looks and self-confidence, I judged he was not someone anyone could easily dismiss.

“Jamie, you don’t have to worry about your status.” It was Michael who spoke this time, and I turned to him. “Your investments in this country almost guarantee that. Provided, that is, you follow all their rules. What that woman did is really of no matter, as the police and child services have determined some abuse may have been going on for some time. The police gave the word during your interview that they were able to locate her husband about an hour ago. He’s indicated he’s not pressing charges against you or the hospital. Apparently, he and his wife have been separated for some time. Also, he had no idea about the abuse of his son.
