Chapter 13

Millie’s superb dinner had been devoured in short order, in the dining room while Millie and Grayson had theirs in the kitchen, even though Sophie had insisted they both should join her in the dining room. Millie had said it’s not “appropriate”; they would have theirs in the kitchen as usual. If she thought she could get away with it, Sophie would have joined Grayson and Millie in the kitchen. She liked the warm cozy atmosphere of the kitchen much better than the cold formal dining room.

Grayson carried the coffee service into the living room where Jacob Conley had spread out several legal-looking documents on the huge mahogany desk at the end of the room. The desk had been Hustus’s pride and joy. Hand-carved and one-of-a-kind made especially for him, he had proudly told folks. No one except for Grayson was allowed to touch it, and then it was only to polish the wood once a week with a secret concoction of special oils, lemon, and bee’s wax.

“Sophie, come. Sit here.” Conley motioned to her, moving out of the way so she could reach the big swivel chair, equally as impressive as the desk. “There are a few more papers for you to sign. The bank has notified me there is a safety deposit box that your grandfather rented, shortly before his death. Unfortunately, the paperwork did not reach my office before the will was read, so, these papers need to be signed before the bank can proceed with opening the box since the key hasn’t been found.”

“What’s in the box?” Sophie asked, sensing another mystery on the horizon.

“I haven’t a clue,” Conley said, sitting down in the chair in front of the desk. “I’ve gone over all of your grandfather’s papers, and there is nothing in them about a new safety deposit box, and I’ve been through this desk and have found nothing there either.”

“Is there any other place Hustus could have put the key?” old man Johnson asked, as Grayson offered him coffee. “Thanks, Grayson. Just set the tray here,” he said, indicating the table in front of the sofa.

“No. None that I can think of,” Conley said, taking the cup of coffee Grayson handed him. “Thanks.”

“Grayson, do you know of anywhere else he might have put valuables, a safe, file cabinet, or something?” Conley asked, turning in his chair to look at Grayson.

“No, sir. None that I can think of,” Grayson said, pausing. “His clothing and personal effects have been boxed and stored in the attic. You are welcome to go through them and to check his room, although the closet, dresser, and chest of drawers have all been cleaned. Millie’s nothing but thorough when it comes to cleaning.” A slight smile played around his mouth as he mentioned Millie.

“Do you think Millie might know of any place?” old man Johnson asked.

“I do not know, sir, but I will ask. If you will excuse me,” Grayson said, with a slight bow and he left the room in search of Millie.
