Chapter 16

Cecily awoke to the touch of Burke’s lips on the tip of her nose.

“Did you know that you snore?”

She wrinkled her nose. Burke pressed a kiss to the little fold between her eyebrows.

“I do not.”

“You do. The sweetest little snort.”

“Like a piglet.”

“Not unlike a piglet.” Burke’s lips moved to her brow.

“You have perverse preferences,” Cecily teased. His mouth was now on her ear. Her pulse was fluttering.

“You seemed perfectly pleased last night.” He left a trail of kisses from her ear down the curve of her throat.

“I was quite enamored last night.”

“And what about this morning?”

Cecily was sure her entire body burned pink and red. She’d awoken him as dawn’s first rays pushed through the curtains. For the first time since they met, she’d woken from dreaming of him to find the real thing there in her bed. And she’d taken full advantage.

Ignoring his question, Cecily rolled over onto her stomach. Undeterred, Burke began pressing kisses to her shoulder.

“We’ve slept ridiculously late. Mary is probably wondering where I am,” Cecily mused. She registered the hour hand on the mantle clock, but not much else. Burke’s mouth was on the nape of her neck.

“She was still at the rushbearing when we left. She may not even be here yet.” Burke continued his unhurried assault of kisses by proceeding down her spine.

“You make a good point ...” she laid her head down on her folded arms, giving herself over to the tingling desire rising from each place his lips touched her skin ...

“Cecily? Are you here?”

Her eyes shot open.

Doors were opening and closing along the hallway.

“Where is everyone? It’s like the staff has all gone off for the day.”

She had to get dressed. Shove Burke under the bed –

“Quick, hide!” She hissed at him.

“Who is that?”

“Get under the coverlet!”

“We did come uninvited –”

“We are her sisters! We do not need an invitation.”

The door opened. It was too late.

“Cecily Rose!”

“Who is this?”

Cecily gritted her teeth, clawing the sheet to her chest. Burke had listened to her edict to get under the coverlet ... though she’d meant to hide completely under it, rather than hardly covering his lower half.

“What are you doing here?” Cecily bit out.

“We came on the carriage from London. Mother sent us with a letter,” Abigail said, holding out a sealed quarto.

“Perhaps you should carry it over to her, Abigail. It looks like she’s forgotten her nightgown,” Pamela said drolly.

Cecily glared at the twins. Her most irritating siblings. Standing there while she was in bed naked with a man for the first time in more than a year. She had to be cursed.

“What kind of heathens arrive at someone’s house and come running up to their bedroom, through a closed door?” Cecily’s temper was dangerously close to exploding out.

“Is this your bedroom?” Abigail asked dubiously, her eyes flitting over the masculine touches – a jacket draped over a chair, Burke’s worn valise, his boots lined up under the window.

“No ...” Cecily huffed.

Beside her, she felt Burke shaking with silent laughter. She pinched him under the coverlet.
