CHICAGO PD AREA 2 DIST 3

CHICAGO, IL. 60637

1:52 a.m.

After Beto and Connor had left the crime scene at Al Capone’s Chicago Manor, Medina swept through the crime scene with sniper-like precision. Her soft brown eyes, keen as they darted around the room while she methodically collected evidence. Directing her team in a cool and collected manner, they worked with an efficiency of movement, gloved hands collected fibers and hairs, swabbing surfaces for prints, and photographing the scene with a practiced ease. Leading by example, she had been thorough, leaving no stone unturned as she worked her way around the room, her attention to detail unwavering.

Satisfied they had collected all the evidence, they carefully sealed it away in evidence bags, labeling each item clearly and precisely. Medina and her team’s work was done, and she led them out of the bullet-ridden home in the same manner that they had entered it - with a determined and focused attitude. Her calm demeanor masked the excitement that was sure to come during evidence analyzation.

At the station, Medina oversaw the transfer of evidence in the evidence deposit office to be logged prior to being taken to the evidence storage room.

“On-call on a Friday night just as summer kicks off. That’s gotta suck,” said Jackson, the evidence custodian. He carefully logged each piece of evidence to preserve chain of evidence.

“Eh, I don’t have of a life anyway.” Medina shrugged. “Too busy with work.”

“Be careful not to waste your life working. One day you’ll wake up and realize that after a lifetime, you haven’t truly lived.” Jackson lifted the first box off the counter and moved it to a table behind him.

“Spoken like a true veteran.” Medina saluted. Despite the silver in the short dark curls of his hair, his skin was taut, and his dark brown eyes reflected a glint of life.

“Laugh now, but don’t worry you’ll get there one day giving the same advice to someone else.”

“I’ll cross that bridge when I get there, but thanks for the advice, Jackson.” Medina signed the last of the forms, and then pushed through the double doors.

She then directed her team to immediately begin the analysis of the evidence they had collected. Scanning fingerprints, reviewing photographs and digital images of the scene, analyzing the forensic evidence, and taking precautions to avoid contaminating the evidence was all a part of the process they had been trained in to maintain the integrity of the department and the investigation.

Medina was about to begin the process of piecing together the puzzle of the shredded newspaper clipping when Solinski stepped into the evidence analysis area. She turned with pen and pad in hand to face him.

“May I have a word?” Solinski towered over her.

“Sure.”

“In private,” Solinski insisted.

“We can step into my office.” Medina sat her pen and pad down on the table and led the way. She turned to her team, who had cast uneasy sidelong glances in their direction. “Everyone carry on with what you’re doing. This will only take a minute.
