‘Please Dad, come with me!’

He didn’t want to go, but this was my call. I was moving back to my home town, out of daughterly duty rather than preference, and the property had caught my eye during an internet search. It was the house of my birth, though barely remembered. But for him it meant much more — a failed marriage and a sudden separation.

From this house I would watch over him, I would become his guardian, his handy(wo)man, perhaps, in the end, his carer. This man who had enjoyed fame for a decade — as an innovative cook — was showing the signs of early dementia. Strange that Brook Bridge was the first house I found, though the town was small and the odds short if you thought about it. The roof under which I had been born, the ground on which I had learned to walk, its walls and fixtures were so thin in my memory as to be translucent. The place meant nothing to me, emotionally. Just a means of getting close to him.

‘Where is the house, precisely?’ he asked, when I rang to tell him that I had identified a likely candidate.

‘Dad, it’s Brook Bridge.’

He paused. I caught the frisson.

‘What’s the matter, Dad?’

‘What’s the matter? You can’t move in there.’

‘Why not? I don’t remember it, and anyway, it’s been renovated. It’s hardly recognisable.’

‘I won’t go there, Anna.’

‘I want to look at it. With you.’

‘Really?’

‘Please Dad, come with me!’

He caught the hurt in my voice; I was doing this to help him. He agreed.
