CHAPTER 57

PARKER DID A QUICK SWEEP UNDER HIS BED with both arms. No gator tooth necklace.

“Checking for gators?” Wilson strolled into the bedroom, grinning.

Parker flopped on his bed. “After your stories tonight? Everybody at that fire circle is checking under their bed about now. Especially Scorza.”

Wilson laughed. “Abercrombie. I kinda hate that guy. And that shot at Harley? That’s a page out of Kingman’s playbook, right?”

Parker absolutely agreed.

“You ever wonder how all these people with daggers for tongues end up using the same tactics? I mean, it’s not like there’s an Abuser 101 class anywhere.”

Parker thought about that for a minute. “They have the same teacher.” He poked both index fingers up like horns, one on each side of his head. “The king of terrors.”

The conversation drifted around to Clayton Kingman and what may have happened to him.

“Personally?” Wilson stopped like he wanted to be really careful about what he said next. “I don’t think he’d make it through one night. Not with the way I saw the gators acting after the hurricane. It’s like they were programmed. Every switch inside them was flipped to kill.”

Mom ducked her head inside the room. “I talked with Dad. And you are going to school tomorrow.”

Parker groaned. “But we have a guest. What kind of a friend would I be if I left him here while—”

“Wilson will shadow you. All day. I’ll call the school office in the morning. If the principal says no, then we can revisit this.”

Which was pretty much guaranteeing there was no chance to get out of it. The principal would probably love the idea that a Hurricane Morgan survivor was in the school.

She kissed each of the boys good night and turned out the light. “Sleep good. Big day tomorrow.”

Taking Wilson with him to school? Yeah, that would be a pretty big day.
