Darius had never seen Captain Freedom so furious before. He’d seen Captain Freedom irritated, amused, bored, and possibly even drunk, but Darius had never seen him in an outright rage. Captain Freedom let loose with a stream of profanity the likes of which Darius had never heard—which said a lot, because Manny, Otto, and Butchie were seasoned professionals when it came to swearing.

The moment Darius was sure of what he had seen—an attack on Kid Spectacular—he followed every single guideline required of him. CAD ignored him, claiming there was too much going on to confirm something no one else had reported. An hour later, after the fires were put out and the worst of the injured had been dealt with, CAD decided to look into Darius’s emergency call.

It took only a few minutes of reviewing the footage to realize that in fact there was an emergency. An investigation and emergency rescue operation kicked into high gear moments after that. But Captain Freedom wanted to know why Darius’s first report had been ignored.

“A valuable member of Super Justice Force is missing,” said Captain Freedom. “Only one person in SAO noticed, and no one in CAD—not a single person—did a damn thing when he called it in! If anything happens to Kid Spectacular, heads will roll!”

Within an hour, every news channel ran a story about the attack on Kid Spectacular. Captain Freedom appeared at a press conference, asking the public to come forward with any information.

Four hours after Kid Spectacular was attacked, the first video appeared on the Internet. Kid Spectacular, chained to a chair, being tortured by Creepy Crawler, popped up on KillingKidSpectacular.com. Creepy Crawler promised that by the time he finished, Kid Spectacular would be dead. “But not before I have some fun carving him to pieces,” Creepy Crawler said into the camera.

Reserve members of Super Justice Force were called in to help with the search and rescue operation. Several freelance heroes and crime fighters volunteered their services, and an emergency hotline was set up. The best team members from SAO and CAD were pulled together to form a Fast Response Unit consisting of twenty two-person teams, one from SAO and the other from CAD, working directly with a rescue team. Nightwatcher, still out of action because of his eye surgery, led the FRU operation. Even without his costume, Kaebel Kaine was still the best detective in all of Super Justice Force.

Based on the time between when Creepy Crawler captured Kid Spectacular and when the first video appeared on the Internet, search parameters were established. The parameters covered a dauntingly large area that represented an endless possibility of hiding places where Creepy Crawler could be torturing Kid Spectacular. Each of the FRU teams was given a quadrant that they were responsible for monitoring.

It came as no surprise that Chuck Maslon didn’t want Darius on FRU. He cited Darius’s age, a lack of time on the job, and the fact that Darius had violated procedure during the initial crisis, when he stopped scanning live feeds to rewatch the news footage.
