Itâs easy today to be misled into thinking that the many modern movies and TV shows about Robin are based on real events, but actually they represent centuries of tinkering with stories. Itâs probably impossible to trace the originals. Itâs amazing enough that the ballads have lasted at least seven hundred yearsâit would be too much to expect them not to have changed.
Did You Know⦠In the famous rhymes, Robin is unwell and visits his aunt, the prioress of Kirklees, to be bled. (Bloodletting was a standard medical practice at the time.) Unfortunately for Robin, his aunt had hatched a plot to murder him, and the bloodletting provided the perfect opportunity. The prioress simply didnât stop the bleeding (one of the more gruesome versions of the story said she used a bowl with a hole in it), and Robin died soon after.
