CHAPTER 26

BACK IN THE hotel, the concierge hurried towards us the moment we set foot in the lobby, her heels clicking on the black-and-white tiles. The skirt she wore didn’t help her speed—tight and straight-cut from thigh to knee, it meant she could barely move her legs. I noticed her eyes flick downwards to Cade’s fingers intertwined with mine before she focused back on his face.

“Mr. Duchamp, we’ve reserved a table in Aston’s for you. It’s our premier restaurant.”

“Thanks. Does it have a children’s menu?”

“The chef’s been briefed, and he’ll make anything this little sweetheart would like.”

“What time is the reservation?”

“You can come down whenever you want.”

A lady on the far side of the lobby dropped her purse, and the baby in her arms began to wail as her partner stared in horror at the bottles of milk rolling across the floor. The concierge patted me on the shoulder.

“If you’ll excuse me, I just need to go and help with the…” She gestured at the lady. “Enjoy your dinner, and call me if you need anything.”

The baby’s cries must have woken Scarlet, because she blinked groggily. “Can we go on the Dumbo ride again?”

“Sweetie, we’re back in the hotel. It’s almost time for dinner.”

Her face fell.

“But we can go back to the park tomorrow. Do you want to visit the Animal Realm?”

“Are there unicorns?”

“No unicorns, but there are elephants and butterflies.”

She scrambled out of Cade’s grip and raced across the lobby, flapping her hands. “I want to be a butterfly! I love butterflies! Can I have a butterfly?”

“At least she doesn’t want an elephant,” Cade muttered.

“Come here.” I opened my arms, and she jumped into them. “How about we take lots of pictures of you with the butterflies?”

“Yes! Will there be pink ones?”

“Maybe.”

“What’s for dinner? Can I have french fries?”

“Sure you can,” Cade said, and I rolled my eyes. For a tough guy, he sure was a soft touch.

“But you’ve got to eat some vegetables too, okay?”

“Potatoes are a vegetable,” Cade told me as we climbed on the elevator.

“Don’t give her ideas.”

He flashed an unexpected grin, and at that moment, he looked exactly like his daughter.

“Just sayin’.”

It didn’t take me long to change into something suitable for the cool atmosphere of the restaurant, although Scarlet held things up a bit when she couldn’t find Eric.

“Where did you leave him?”

“On my bed. I know I did.”

I got down on my knees to check underneath, then shook the duvet out, but there was no sign of the cuddly elephant. Not until Cade appeared in the doorway.

“Looking for this?”

Scarlet screeched and skipped over to him. “Thank you!”

“Where was he?”

“On the dining table. You ready?”

“Do I look okay?”

“Beautiful as always, Taylor. As are you, little lady. You want a piggyback?”

Cade swung Scarlet up onto his back and headed towards the door, leaving me giddy. He thought I looked beautiful? Not “okay”? Not “fine”? The most I’d ever got out of Dean in six years was a “nice.”

“Taylor! Cade says I can have chocolate ice
