CHAPTER 26
BACK IN THE hotel, the concierge hurried towards us the moment we set foot in the lobby, her heels clicking on the black-and-white tiles. The skirt she wore didnât help her speedâtight and straight-cut from thigh to knee, it meant she could barely move her legs. I noticed her eyes flick downwards to Cadeâs fingers intertwined with mine before she focused back on his face.
âMr. Duchamp, weâve reserved a table in Astonâs for you. Itâs our premier restaurant.â
âThanks. Does it have a childrenâs menu?â
âThe chefâs been briefed, and heâll make anything this little sweetheart would like.â
âWhat time is the reservation?â
âYou can come down whenever you want.â
A lady on the far side of the lobby dropped her purse, and the baby in her arms began to wail as her partner stared in horror at the bottles of milk rolling across the floor. The concierge patted me on the shoulder.
âIf youâll excuse me, I just need to go and help with theâ¦â She gestured at the lady. âEnjoy your dinner, and call me if you need anything.â
The babyâs cries must have woken Scarlet, because she blinked groggily. âCan we go on the Dumbo ride again?â
âSweetie, weâre back in the hotel. Itâs almost time for dinner.â
Her face fell.
âBut we can go back to the park tomorrow. Do you want to visit the Animal Realm?â
âAre there unicorns?â
âNo unicorns, but there are elephants and butterflies.â
She scrambled out of Cadeâs grip and raced across the lobby, flapping her hands. âI want to be a butterfly! I love butterflies! Can I have a butterfly?â
âAt least she doesnât want an elephant,â Cade muttered.
âCome here.â I opened my arms, and she jumped into them. âHow about we take lots of pictures of you with the butterflies?â
âYes! Will there be pink ones?â
âMaybe.â
âWhatâs for dinner? Can I have french fries?â
âSure you can,â Cade said, and I rolled my eyes. For a tough guy, he sure was a soft touch.
âBut youâve got to eat some vegetables too, okay?â
âPotatoes are a vegetable,â Cade told me as we climbed on the elevator.
âDonât give her ideas.â
He flashed an unexpected grin, and at that moment, he looked exactly like his daughter.
âJust sayinâ.â
It didnât take me long to change into something suitable for the cool atmosphere of the restaurant, although Scarlet held things up a bit when she couldnât find Eric.
âWhere did you leave him?â
âOn my bed. I know I did.â
I got down on my knees to check underneath, then shook the duvet out, but there was no sign of the cuddly elephant. Not until Cade appeared in the doorway.
âLooking for this?â
Scarlet screeched and skipped over to him. âThank you!â
âWhere was he?â
âOn the dining table. You ready?â
âDo I look okay?â
âBeautiful as always, Taylor. As are you, little lady. You want a piggyback?â
Cade swung Scarlet up onto his back and headed towards the door, leaving me giddy. He thought I looked beautiful? Not âokayâ? Not âfineâ? The most Iâd ever got out of Dean in six years was a ânice.â
âTaylor! Cade says I can have chocolate ice
