I awoke the next day. I were still in the boat. The blanket were tucked under my chin. The old man’s cabbage-tree hat sheltered my face. I were laid on my gouged back that were aching and stinging and it were only now that I noticed the smell of fish guts. I lifted a hand and found the side of the boat and pulled myself up. There were no sign of the man. The boat were in a small lagoon surrounded by paperbark trees all bent and leaning into one another but whose leaves had kept the sun off my face.

I groaned without thinking. The damn shirt were stuck to my back there were flies at me immediately they were loud and angry. I rolled over the bow of the boat and into the knee-deep water that were fresh not brackish this were some kind of brook but my thinking were to get that shirt off my wounded back it needed a good soaking. My iron-heavy ankles sank into the pale mud and I scooped water into my parched mouth. I settled into the coolness it were a boon for the saltless water didn’t burn and sting. I crawled on hands and knees to the shore and took in my surroundings.
