MARRIAGE CONTRACT, ROMAN PALESTINE14

Marriages were established through legal contracts like this one belonging to Shelamzious (also known as Shelamzion), whom we met in chapter five. The two parties to the contract are the bride’s father (or other male guardian) and the groom. Sometimes the bride also signed the contract. The contracts detailed the financial arrangements, expectations for behavior on each side, and protective measures for both families’ investments.

There were two types of marriage in the Roman world. In one (known as cum manu marriage), husbands assumed legal authority over their wives. In the first century, it was more common for fathers to retain authority over their daughters by establishing sine manu marriages for them. In a sine manu marriage, the husband had no rights over his wife’s personal, familial property.15
