MARIANA

Ihadn’t expected him to remain true to his word. A part of me believed the second I drifted off, he’d leave me to my dreams, but I should’ve known he was different. The sun peeked through the wooden blinds, highlighting every ounce of golden in his hair and skin. His long legs were planted on the sides of the recliner, though the footrest jutted toward the bed. I’d seen many men before. Marveled at their perfection, but Jacopo held a ruggedness to him that had my mouth watering, legs clenching, and heart begging to drop in the palms of his hands every time those eyes landed on me.

The safe haven in my mind manifested into a real live person who in a matter of hours made me feel safer than I’d ever been. He was different and the knowledge that he’d been watching me for years did nothing to stop me from wanting to be in his presence. I leaned toward the edge of the bed, admiring the loose material draping over his rigid frame, humanizing the monster that I was sure he truly was.

“Anyone ever tell you it’s rude to stare?”

His smoky voice heated my core, replacing my initial shock with a deep yearning that only drew me closer toward his direction. A devious smirk claimed every shred of common sense I had. This man was no better than any other murderer hired by my father yet little ol’ me couldn’t stop picturing those large arms wrapped firmly around me, pounding into me as if I were the only hope to populate the world’s future. The mass of dirty thoughts floating through my head after a near death experience was disturbing to say the least. I knew I looked like shit. No shower was strong enough to heal the bruises blemishing my skin. The hardened swell of muscle protruding out the side of my face was anything but mesmerizing, yet every time our eyes met…

My chest tightened, his tongue dipping out, slickening his lips. “I was thinking. Ari, Eerie’s little brother, was a sniper in the French Army. He’s really good with guns. Even built a little training course not too far away from here. You can let off a little steam. Get you some air.” He crossed the room, lowering in front of me while allowing his arms to rest near my sides. A feathered brush of his skin against mine drew my eyes closed, leaning into him as his thumb caressed the nagging bruise against my cheek. “When was the last time you went shooting?” his whispered query was laced with expectation.

My spine straightened, the attempt to pull away neglected as he pushed forward, his forehead pressing against mine while the sweet warmth of his breath peppered across my skin. “Don’t do that.” The low command intensified by the fire beneath his eyes.

“Why? Realized this is too much and want to make sure I’m not completely defenseless when you send me out on my own?” my voice cracked, hating how his hands eased the building anger as they pressed against my neck.
