Active Reason
Hegel continues his analysis of how Reason tries to make itself âat home in the worldâ in this section and the next (entitled âThe Actualization of Rational Self-Consciousness Through Its Own Activityâ and âIndividuality Which Takes Itself To Be Real In And For Itselfâ). In considering these sections, it is important to take into account the introductory preamble to the first of them (PS: §§348â59, pp. 211â17). Hegel makes clear here that the strategies he considers in the rest of this chapter are all ones that take as their starting point âmodernâ assumptions about the individual and his place in the social world, and so should be contrastedwith the less individualist outlook of premodern (specifically Greek) accounts of what it means to be âat home in the worldâ. Only once these âmodernâ standpoints have been shown to be inadequate will consciousness âturn backâ to see how this premodern outlook came to be lost (in the chapter on Spirit). Hegelâs characterization of the fundamental differences between the ancient and modern conceptions of the individual here is therefore vital to the rest of his discussion.
