EATING AND DRINKING

For evening dining, you’re restricted to the hotels along the beach, which offer excellent food but (thanks to the village’s remoteness) are all quite expensive; as well as Maria’s there are a couple of snackshops on the main road, though opening hours vary. Basic groceries are available from the rum shop on the main street and a small supermarket opposite. Nightlife is nonexistent here save for the odd party at McHaven hotel’s bar area, where the village band, Roots and Branches, perform most Sundays and the dancing goes on into the night. The hotel bars also offer cocktails and drinks, but things tend to close up shop pretty early here. The annual fishermen’s fete, on the last weekend of June, is a raucous affair, with much music, dancing and drinking.

Le Grande Almandier Grand Riviere beach 670 2294, legrandealmandier.com. A reliable place to eat, dishing up burgers, chicken and fish with fries (TT$65–125) plus sandwiches (TT$45) and more elaborate meat and fish mains (from TT$150). Dinner options (TT$160–250) include chicken in a white wine and mushroom sauce, braised lamb in a red wine sauce and fish with a garlic sauce. The bar is usually a lively spot for a drink. Daily 7.30am–9pm.

Lime Inn Acajou Hotel, Paria Main Rd 670 3771, acajoutrinidad.com. A lovely setting on an open wooden terrace by the river’s edge, with starters such as Greek salad, shrimp balls or gazpacho (TT$65–90), plus pizzas, bake and shark (TT$70/105) and mains (TT$145–180) from fish with lemongrass butter or coconut and lime sauce to various chicken option (curried, BBQ or bacon-wrapped breast filled with gorgonzola), roast duck or pork in a tamarind sauce. Good desserts, too. Daily 7.30–10am, 12.30–2pm & 6–8pm.

Maria’s Paria Main Rd 353 4163. Inexpensive, tasty chicken and fish lunches with local sides (TT$35–45), plus evening offerings of pholouri, and chicken or fish with fries. Tues, Fri & Sat 11.30am-2pm & 5.30–8pm.

Ylang Ylang Mt Plaisir Estate, Grande Riviere beach 670 8381 or 670 2217, mtplaisir.com. A lovely beachside setting, and delicious food made with fresh, often organic ingredients. Try the coconut bake with buljol or tomato/aubergine choka for breakfast (eggs, bacon and pancakes also available; TT$45–95). Otherwise, starters range from salads, fishcakes and calamari (TT$55–65); mains (TT$80–225) include pasta with pesto or bolognaise sauce; home-made ravioli; chicken with wine, capers and herbs; or a lovely array of seafood – fish comes roasted or stewed in coconut or with a white wine and cream sauce, shrimp with ginger and garlic, and there’s roast lamb and steaks, too. Daily 8–10.30am, 12.30–2.30pm & 6.30–8.30pm.
