Café Latino Piazza Duomo 6079 976 541; map. Stylish place for a relaxing evening aperitif, with outside tables beneath parasols on the walls overlooking the port. Snacks and ice creams are also served, though prices are high. June–Sept daily 9am–2am; closed Tues Oct–May.

Il Ruscello 2km northeast of Alghero on the Olmedo road 345 907 5072; map. Frequented mainly by the 18–25 age group, this club features Latin, reggaeton, chart and house music on two open-air dancefloors. Count on about €15 entry, which may include the first drink; subsequent drinks cost €5–15, There’s usually a dedicated bus service from Piazza Sulis on club nights. Mid-June to mid-Sept Sat & occasional other nights 11pm–5am.

L’Arcafé Lungomare Dante 6328 174 4091; map. Seafront hangout with regular DJs and live music throughout the year. There’s a long list of cocktails, beers and other drinks, along with excellent panini and salads and other nibbles. Gets very lively in summer. June–Sept daily 6pm–2am.

La Bajada Via Roma 22348 275 5038; map. A secluded nook just a few steps away from the bustle, this is a cool place for a quiet drink, best at night. Snacks and meals are available, from pastas and salads to grilled meat. Mon–Sat 10am–12.30am, Sun 5pm–midnight.

Pasticceria Ciro Via Sássari 35 079 979 960; map. Treat yourself to the best pastries in town at this place beloved of locals, from bigné (éclairs) to cannoli (ricotta-filled tubes), traditional Sard biscuits and luscious fruit concoctions. Ice creams and sandwiches are also available, and there’s great coffee too. There are a couple of tables outside at the back. Tues–Sun 7.15am–8.30pm.

Poco Loco Via Gramsci 8 079 983 604,pocolocoalghero.com; map. Beers, pizzas, steaks, live blues and jazz (Oct–May), and general carousing are on offer in this spacious hall off Piazza Sulis. There’s bowling upstairs too. Tues–Sun 7.30pm–late.

Shopping

De Filippis Via Carlo Alberto 23079 979 394; map. You’ll find a huge choice of jewellery and ornaments fashioned from coral at this traditional shop, a stalwart of the local coral trade. Mon–Sat 9.30am–1pm & 5–8pm.

Il Labirinto Via Carlo Alberto 119079 980 496; map. A range of English books, guides and maps is sold here. July & Aug daily 9am–1pm & 4.30pm–1am; Sept–June 9am–1pm & 4–9pm.

OVS Piazza Sulis079 973 2096; map. A useful general store for reasonably priced clothes and accessories. Mon–Sat 9.30am–8.30pm, Sun 10am–1.30 & 4.30–8.30pm.

Sigma Via Sássari 49079 601 0852; map. Well-stocked local supermarket with a particularly good food hall. Mon–Sat 8am–8.45pm, Sun 8.30am–8.30pm.

Markets

A daily food market occupies the block between Via Cágliari and Via Sássari, and Via Genova and Via Mazzini. Wed mornings see a large and lively general market along Viale Europa, near the Lido di San Giovanni, a great source of food, clothes and crafts. There’s also a Sat morning general market on Via Fiume, Fertilia. In summer, stalls selling local sweet delicacies – biscuits and pastries – among crafts and other knick-knacks, set up along Alghero’s Via Garibaldi and at the port every night until late.
