Chapter 38

Private Hanno Foche stuck a spade into the charred, ashen ground where one of Peenemünde’s women’s dormitories had once stood. It had been a year since the air raid but the clearing of rubble continued. Raising a spade-full of dirt mixed with broken masonry and shards of glass, Foche dumped the refuse into a wooden wheelbarrow, repeating the process until filling and pushing it to a dumpster where another group of soldiers unloaded the debris.

Striking something metallic, Foche reached down and curiously dug his fingers through dirt and crumbled brick. Feeling something, he pulled out a thumb-sized, rectangular metal casing with a small square lens. It looked like a tiny camera. Blowing dirt off of it, he curiously eyed the black, faded lettering on its side – Minox.

“Foche!” a sergeant’s voice barked. “What have you there?”

Puzzled, Foche handed the object to the sergeant.

“Where did you find this?”

“Right there.” Foche scratched the ground with the toe of his boot.

Inspecting the damaged but intact micro-Minox camera, the sergeant turned to the young private. “Good job, Foche!” He slapped his back. “You just earned a three-day pass!”
