TRADITION IN THE MODERN ERA

The four-block area between 47th and 51st streets and from Fifth Avenue to Sixth has a rich, fascinating history. The land’s original Dutch inhabitants would likely have been stunned to see today’s Art Deco commercial complex of Rockefeller Center.

Paul Manship’s golden statue of Prometheus and the enormous seventy-story skyscraper at 30 Rockefeller Center—the RCA Building—are icons of New York City, images that everyone knows whether he’s visited Manhattan or not. Also among New York’s icons is the Rockefeller family, with its generations of powerful and prominent businessmen. Although the Rockefeller family no longer owns Rockefeller Center, it remains a beloved Midtown landmark as iconic as the family itself.
