Chapter Eleven

Her father was murdered? Willow began to tremble from head to foot. No, that couldn’t be right. Why would they want him dead? Everything around her slowed. She couldn’t move, couldn’t draw in a breath.

Her gaze moved to her grandmother. The color had drained from her face. She looked old and haggard. Willow felt as if she watched from the end of a long tunnel. As Grandmother stood, she began to sway. Savage rushed to her side. She clutched her chest and moaned. He caught her before she fell.

“Grandmother!” Willow tried to stand, but her feet wouldn't support her.

“Willow, call 911,” Savage said.

She looked his way. Something in the firm tone of his voice snapped her out of the fog surrounding her. She grabbed the phone and called 911 as Savage helped Grandmother back onto her chair. She was so pale. Oh, God, this couldn't be happening. She silently prayed, please, please don't let it be a heart attack.

"I don't need an ambulance," Grandmother gasped.

Willow ignored her as she spoke to the operator, giving her the address before she turned back to Grandmother. "It's too late. I've already called for one. You can at least let them check you out."

"I don't have time to be sick. There's too much I have to get done." She choked back a sob. "Oh my God, someone poisoned my son. Poor Jeremy. Who would do such a thing?" She grabbed her chest again and moaned.

Willow rushed to her side, trying to hold herself together. She had to be strong. Grandmother needed her. "We'll find out who did this and make them pay." She brushed away the tear that ran down her cheek. They could've had more time with him, but it was stolen from them. He wasn't the best father, but he was still her father.

Deep breath. Exhale. She needed to concentrate on Grandmother.

"I'll alert the staff that an ambulance is coming," Savage said as he moved toward the door. "Stay with her. I'll be right back." He left the door open.

"Don't let him leave your side," Grandmother said. "I don't like the man, but I don't want anything to happen to you."

"Yes, Grandmother."

She grasped Willow's hand tightly. "If they can get to your father, they can get to you. Don't trust anyone."

"I’ll get your pills." Why hadn’t she already given her one? It was as though her brain wasn’t functioning normally.

Grandmother shook her head. "No, I don’t want you to leave me."

Gail came rushing inside. "I just heard. Is there anything I can do?" She twined her fingers together.

"Get grandmother's pills," Willow told her. "They’re in her purse."

Gail hurried over and opened Grandmother’s purse, grabbing the pill bottle and rushing them to Willow. She did exactly what she did the last time and placed one under Grandmother’s tongue.

"Just try to stay calm," Willow told her.

"I've been too hard on you," Grandmother told her. "I was only trying to do what I thought was best. I should've let you have more fun."

Willow’s heart skipped a beat.
