Chapter Twenty-Eight

The sky over Westminster’s Main Street was the color of ash after a doused fire. As Earl’s casket was lowered into the ground, a light drizzle sputtered and settled into an earnest spring rain.

Funeral procession vehicles lined Westminster’s Main Street, and several onlookers gawked at the burial proceedings wrapping up behind the public library in the historic cemetery that held the remains of many prominent Carroll County families. Now, the slot beside Earl’s beloved wife would be filled, and his date of birth and death added to the Sorenson family headstone.

After the conclusion of the ceremony, Hunter turned up the collar of his sport coat and hunched his shoulders against the rain as he walked toward his vehicle. Two investigators in black suits flanked him, the three of them making a nice show of force with their erect posture and watchful expressions.

A man holding an umbrella approached. The investigators threw wary glances at one another.

Hunter rocked on his feet, his hands in the pockets of his slacks, waiting.

A smile split the man’s anxious face as he approached. “Hi. Sorry to bother you at this…uh, unfortunate time, but I was wondering if you’d…well, if you’d discovered what happened.”

Hunter smiled a thin smile. “And your interest would be because…?”

“I am in the process of moving to Glyndon. I’ve moved my business here, and I—”

“What’s your business, sir?”

“I’m sorry, name’s Wyatt. Wyatt Harp.”

Hunter grimaced. “The attorney?”

Wyatt gave him a look. “Yeah. How’d you know that?”

“You happen to be a neighbor of Olivia Callahan?”

Awareness dawned on Wyatt’s face. “You’re him, aren’t you? The famous Detective Faraday? The one who took down the husband in the Mercy’s Miracle case?”

“Not famous. Not anything. Doing my job.”

The two other men relaxed, smiles teasing their lips.

Wyatt cleared his throat. “You can understand why I’m interested, Detective. She told me strange things had been happening, and that she found,” he pointed toward the cemetery, “the deceased when she went to interview for a job. I’ve given her the ability to use my outdoor videocam as a protective measure, and I’m concerned, of course, that this man’s death might not only affect her, but me and my business in the process. So I’m wondering what my, I don’t know…my mindset should be.”

Hunter scrutinized Wyatt. Took in the curly, brown hair, not unlike his own, the intense, blue eyes, and the intelligence behind them. Annoyed, he realized that he was thinking about how well Olivia knew this guy instead of the homicide case.

“Why don’t I give you a call tomorrow?” Hunter said. “Understand though, investigation is ongoing. I can’t tell you much. But maybe I can give you a feel for how it’s going.”

Wyatt reached into his pocket. “Here’s my contact information. Talk then, Detective.” He left.

One of the investigators punched Hunter in the arm, smiling. “Looks like you got a lot goin’ on, Detective.”

“Shut up,” Hunter grumbled, sticking Wyatt’s card in his sport coat pocket.
