CHAPTER 20
I hadnât heard from Bella and assumed Fernando was having the time of his life with his new harem. I had put off ringing her for an update, because I knew it would make me want to rush over there and I really had to let him go for his sake. He had looked so happy surrounded by others of his kind. I tried to push him out of my mind as I got ready for work and I was at my desk at police HQ by seven oâclock. I finished my report for Superintendent Breedon and had just sent it over to him when he walked into the room.
âAh, good morning, Rohan. I see youâre already hard at work.â
âIâm keen to learn from the example set by my superiors, Sir.â
His deep blue eyes bored into mine, trying to work out if I was being sarcastic or not. He decided not to say anything, so I briefed him on the latest developments.
âThanks,â he said when Iâd finished. âWeâre briefing the Indian government and Kumarâs family through the Downing Street channels, but thereâs pressure on the Chief Constable to solve the case quickly.â
âIt takes as long as it takes, Sir. What dâyou want me to do?â
Superintendent Breedonâs moustache twitched. He cleared his throat. âJust keep me posted,â he said, and walked out.
I desperately wanted a cup of tea but Angie had an update for me.
âWe have two independent witnesses to interview about the body we found in the park,â she said, as we walked briskly to the interview room. âI donât think they know each other. Oneâs an Asian woman in her thirties, a nurse at the private hospital near the park, and the otherâs a Caucasian man who walks his dog in the park. We have the woman first.â
The informal interviews were taking place in the pink room, its soothing pastel shades, comfortable settees and vases full of bright flowers helping to make witnesses feel at ease. Angie and I walked in. The woman on the settee looked nervous. She made to stand up, but I gestured for her to remain sitting. I introduced myself, shook her hand, and asked if she wanted anything to drink. She declined.
âSo, Mrs Bharti Gohil,â I began, sitting down and checking the notes Angie had placed in front of me. âThank you for coming in. Please understand, youâre not a suspect but you might hold some important information about a serious crime. You were in the vicinity of the leisure park two nights ago?â
She nodded, her brown eyes flashing nervously from me to Angie. She fiddled with a rose-gold chain around her neck. âHow did you know I was there, Inspector Sharma?â
âCCTV cameras nearby picked up the number plate on your car. Can you tell me what time you reached the park and what you did when you got there?â
âI parked the car at about seven fifteen and went for a walk along the path in the park.â
âDo you usually walk in the park in the dark by yourself, Mrs Gohil?â
âThere are plenty of lampposts along the path.
