Anna sat tapping the wheel of the Porsche and peered into the eerie darkness that had consumed Brick Lane. Fifteen minutes had passed and still no word from Drum. She tried to reassure herself that the man her mother had come to trust over the years was a seasoned professional, and if anyone could pull off this high stakes data heist it was him. It was the girl who worried her. A live wire; an unknown quantity; the fly in the ointment.

The sound of late-night revellers echoed down the Lane. Drunken teenagers, she thought, making merry while the lights were out. She resumed her tapping and told herself that she had made the right decision. What would Alice have done? She chided herself for entertaining the thought. She may be her mother’s daughter, but she was not her mother. And where was Alice?

Her relationship with her mother had been a difficult one over the years. The long absences abroad when she was very young, and then being packed off to boarding school as soon as she was old enough. It was how Alice had been raised—distant parents that slipped in and out of her life. She never knew her father and Alice never mentioned him. The sound of merriment was getting louder, punctuated by jeering and cursing. Perhaps not teenagers after all, but yobs out to cause mayhem in the pitch black. They must be close by. She picked up her phone and checked the time, the screen’s light casting a spectral glow inside the car. A great cheer rang out, and she realised too late the mistake she had just made.

She immediately switched off her phone, but not before catching sight of a bottle smashing onto the pavement, narrowly missing her car. She reached inside the glove compartment and realised she had no weapon. Her assignment in the City did not warrant having one signed out. What would Alice do?

A gang of young men appeared out of the gloom at the entrance to the street where she was parked, their faces eerily lit by their phones. This was beginning to look ugly. More phones lit up and pointed in her direction.

“Nice car!” someone shouted. “Shame to scratch it.”

Another jeer went up and another bottle flew past the car, smashing against the wall. Can’t stay here, she thought. Time to go. Her hand reached for the engine starter button and then stopped when the Lane was lit up by
