TWELVE

KERRIGAN WALKED BEHIND EMERSON AND in front of Bly. She kept waiting for him to demand her attention but all she got was the occasional glance, a narrowing of his eyes, or sometimes a slight smile, as if he could gather something about her just from a look.

Leaving Vagaris was simple with Kerrigan in the group, unrestrained and looking like a sponsor, not a prisoner. The guards at the gate even nodded at them as they left.

They walked for a couple hours before stopping. There were fewer screams now, as if the killing lessened the closer dawn came.

They made camp quickly. Demelza was the only one with a small tent she unpacked from the long slender bag she’d been carrying. The rest of them had bedrolls that they spread around the hidden fire before pulling out their packs of food.

Kerrigan shook his head when Bly offered him a handful of dried apples.

“I hate to say it, but I need to eat something else,” he said.

They all froze with food halfway to their mouths. Vampires needed to drink blood daily or their strength would dwindle rapidly, and they’d become less and less tolerant of the sun.

“You didn’t bring anything with you?” Demelza snapped.

He shrugged. “It was a bit spur of the moment.”

“Usually we don’t bother feeding captives,” Demelza said. “You don’t really need to keep your strength up.”

“But I’m not actually your prisoner, am I?”

“You could be.”

They sat in tense silence for a moment.

Maybe they could overpower him, but if he decided to fight them for any reason, then surely some of them would die.

Vincent glared at Bly, and he didn’t need to say a thing to accuse her: she was the one who’d thrown out their original plan. They could’ve had a bound, unconscious vampire, but now they were sitting around in a circle with someone who could easily kill them if given the upper hand.

“Well, you’re not getting a drop of my blood,” Demelza said.

“I wouldn’t drink witch blood even if I were dying,” Kerrigan said, which didn’t make sense at all. Vampires loved witch blood. It was one of the reasons they had the Games, after all.

Kerrigan suddenly smiled, eyeing each one of them in turn. His gaze slid back to Emerson. “You’re particularly handsome, so I’m sure you’d be wonderful.”

“No,” Emerson said.

Kerrigan shrugged. He turned to Vincent and Nova. “You both look like you’d be… bitter.”

Vincent looked one second away from decapitating him.

“Although I do like your feistiness,” Kerrigan added, winking at Vincent.

He glanced down at Bly. “And you…” He trailed off, like he’d forgotten what he wanted to say about her.

Bly’s mouth went dry, but she spoke anyway. “I’ll do it,” she said.

“She hates blood,” Emerson interjected.

Bly shook her head, but Kerrigan was already frowning at her.

“For crying out loud,” Nova said. “I’ll feed the damn vampire. I’ve sold blood my whole life. A fang can’t be different than a needle.”

“I can make it different,” Kerrigan said, his voice seductive, but he wasn’t looking at Nova; his eyes were still on Bly.
