I sighed as I let the warm water of the bath soak into me. My hair was piled high on my head to keep it dry, and the deep tub let me sink all the way into the water.

All four of the Quad had left a few hours before, only after I swore I wouldn’t leave the house. I had no idea what task they had to complete and honestly? I didn’t care.

Being alone was nice. It gave me time to relax, to spend on myself without needing to keep up any appearances. I’d first exercised, then made myself lunch out of sandwich supplies in the fridge, then finally decided to take a long, hot bath.

“Go figure—we leave and you get naked.”

I opened my eyes to find Dane standing there, a grin as he stared at me, despite how the bubbles hid anything from him. “You know, you could have knocked.”

“Sure, but I like catching you off guard.”

I couldn’t feel the annoyance I wanted. I wasn’t sure why, since I could feel that often enough with them. Maybe it was his smirk, maybe it was how the hot water had eased away most of my tension, but I found I was, if anything, glad to see him.

“So where have you been?” I asked.

“Errands. You know how it is.” Dane came further into the room and sat on the closed toilet lid. “Then I had to make sure you hadn’t drowned in here. What sort of protection would I be if I didn’t watch over you?”

That made me pause, brought to the surface something I’d always wondered but never knew.

Dane frowned. “What’s going on in our head all of a sudden?”

“How did you end up honor-bound to my mom?”

Dane didn’t smile again, instead leaning forward to place his elbows on his knees. His gaze rested on a spot in the tub, on bubbles there, but I had a feeling he wasn’t actually seeing that. “That’s pretty old history, Nem. You sure you want to dig that up?”

Did I? My time back here was all just more digging, all pulling apart the past to see what hid beneath the rocks. Still, an unease made me hesitate before answering. I was able to see the Quad in a specific way, and I couldn’t shake my fear that something could change that.

However, the question still beating at me meant I knew my answer. I hadn’t run from the truth in a long time—I wouldn’t now. “Yeah, I want to know. I want to understand why you were a part of my life, why you’re bound the way you are.”

Dane nodded, but it took him a few long moments before he answered, before his soft voice filled the quiet room. “You know better than you used to the sort of men we are, the skills we have and the things we’ve had to do to hone those skills.”

“If you’re trying to scare me, you’re wasting your time.”

“I’m not. I’m just trying to make you understand.
