Chapter Thirteen

I continued to cycle power to the dragon, focusing on that as I held onto that energy, letting it flow from me, out to the dragons, and then back. The more that I held onto my cycle, the more that I called it to me, trying to pull that power inward. I felt an overwhelming need to do so. There was not just the fire; there was a need. It was filling me, as if Affellah had wanted me to be alert here.

That was startling, but I held onto that energy, trying to maintain that connection, and it took very little for me to do so. Very little for me to feel that power, to know it flowing from the dragons, but also from the way that Asanley held onto Affellah. She was the only one holding onto it, though. This person, this Servant, was powerful.

She had truly connected to Affellah in this land. It meant that she was a Servant here.

There would be very little that I would be able to do when it came to Affellah, especially in this place, and with her drawing upon this kind of power.

“Release your connection,” she said, facing me. “It is unnecessary.”

“Nora,” Alison said, stepping forward. Thenis shook his head slightly. Alison caught herself, and clutched her hands at her sides. I could feel the faint surge of Affellah from her. “I’m sorry that we didn’t come and get you when he first came to us. We—”

“I understand why you did not,” Nora said. She glanced over to Asanley, her eyes narrowing slightly, before she pulled her attention back to me. “You believe you understand Affellah.”

“It’s not about what I understand. It’s about—”

“And you would like to see Affellah.”

I sulked. I glanced over to Asanley and could feel her pushing her connection to Affellah, though I knew that it was different here. I knew that it was not nearly as potent as it was for her in the Vard lands. There was something about this place that changed things for her. I had to believe that whatever it was, whatever power that was here, mitigated her ability. Either that, or perhaps there was something different about the connection altogether here.

“I suppose that I would,” I said.

“Are you sure that’s necessary?” Thenis asked, barely looking up.

“I think that might answer a few questions for them, don’t you?” Nora asked, shooting Thenis a hard look. Then it faded.

Nora tipped her head, and I could feel the heat radiating off of her, the energy that reminded me so much of the Servant and the Vard lands. She turned, motioning for me to follow.

I could feel the heat, the strange energy in the air, and he glanced at Asanley. She was holding onto her power, but she was also looking with a different expression in her eyes. “She is a Servant. We have to understand how.” She turned to me. “Perhaps this was always going to be my journey.”

“Now it’s about your journey?” I asked, trying to keep my voice low, not wanting to draw too much attention from the others around us.
