EVERY MOMENT WITH FISHER was a surprise, and this time was no different. After they promised not to argue about what happened at the meeting anymore, Fisher took Billie Jean to his home. It wasn’t as extravagant as the mansions the Lockes and Bernsteins owned, but luxurious enough to remind Billie Jean she didn’t belong there or with a man like Fisher. But she pushed doubt aside. She just didn’t care about what society might think of them when she was with him. He only had to flash one smile, and she was floating, not caring if she ever came back to earth.

Three stories of antique wood and bay windows, it didn’t look like the home of a man. It was too clean and polished, something you’d see decorated by the dainty hands of some high-society lady like Katherine Bernstein. Whoever had decorated the place had exquisite taste. Billie Jean hadn’t ever been in a rich person’s home before but she imagined they all had the same things in them as Fisher had: heavy curtains weighed down with imported fabric, the floors shielded by carpets and rugs, replicas of famous portraits, and bright wallpaper that gave needed relief from the tense wood.

All her life Billie Jean had dreamed of being rich, but if this was what it felt like, she didn’t wanna be. She just didn’t feel comfortable with the antique furniture and golden chimes hanging before each door. Funny thing was, Fisher didn’t seem like he fit there either. He’d struggled to be this character his parents felt he should’ve been, but he couldn’t fool Billie Jean. She knew he longed for something more that even money could give him, and she was determined to find out what.
