In the early stages of an herb’s life it is a good idea to regularly pinch out the tops to encourage new growth and a bushy habit. Indeed, many herbs will grow better if they are regularly picked. So make a point of visiting your plants regularly, at least once a week, to see how they are doing and to tend to them. Whilst you are checking your plants, it is a good idea to check their labels too. Many people set aside a regular day for this, chosen so that the following days are the most convenient for drying herbs. In a household where most people are out, at school or work on weekdays, Sunday would be a good choice, as the drying herbs do not then impinge on weekend activities. Many herbs are extremely sensitive to dry conditions, so if you have a hot, dry climate, or a spell of very hot weather, you might like to check on your herbs daily to see if they need water.

Whenever you tend your plants, or pick them for use, remember to give thanks to the Goddess and the God for supplying health and healing from the land.
