SNOW WAS falling heavily now. It was damp and beautiful, stringing through Enya’s hair and the horse’s mane while they trotted along the train tracks north. The beast’s hooves crunched atop the earth, cracking leaves and twigs that had managed to snag their way onto the wooden panels that lined her path.

Several horse tracks left indents in the earth and headed in the same direction, so she assumed that Carson and the princes couldn’t have been far. She was right.

Their voices soon cut through the hollow quiet.

“… we can’t just stay here! We’ll be killed if we’re caught—by humans or fae,” Rowan exclaimed. “I don’t know about you, pretty boy, but I’d rather not be turned into some troll’s snack.”

Enya flushed. He must have been talking to Carson and being a royal pain in the ass, as usual.

With a sigh of relief, she snapped her reins and swerved into their direction. The horse beneath her complied, huffing his displeasure at their change in pace. Enya ran a soothing hand over his mane, and he leaned into it eagerly, seemingly unused to such affections. Not everyone was kind to animals, especially those used for labor. It made her sick to think of how the king used to treat his own horses.

Enya eased through the mossy brush to find her crew all together in a clearing waiting for her. Each boy was seated atop his nickering creature, not seeming to have taken a break from riding. But considering the circumstances, none of them could really afford one.

They’d be reaching the war front soon. Bullets and bombs awaited them—and whatever new weaponry either Brasova or Skeyya had created for the deadly skirmish.

White, frosty plains would be covered in crimson speckles. Enya had no doubt.

“Took you long enough,” Rowan muttered, taking a swig from a flask of water stashed inside his jacket. “We were just about to leave without you.” Both Beacon and Niall’s faces darkened. They too seemed to be growing exhausted of their brother’s snarky behavior.

Carson didn’t even try to hide his disdain, letting out a scoff. “No, we weren’t. If anyone’s getting left behind, it’s you.” His eyes shifted to Enya’s as his hand ran slowly over his gunshot wound. A silent promise of protection even in the worst of times; of loyalty sworn even after everything they’d been through. Even after she’d rejected him. Warmth brewed under her skin at his comment, igniting summer inside her despite the wintry air, but she ignored it. Now wasn’t the time.

Would there ever be a time?

“Good.” Enya gave a light cough, gesturing to the endless trees with a nod of her head. “What do you boys say we high-tail it out of here before Sean and his goons catch up?”

They turned their horses north. It seemed that surviving another day was something they could all agree on. Staying out here meant likely being eaten or shot at by elusive Brasovian scouts, and considering the looming threat of the Crimson Witch, Enya was all too eager to get out of Belsale.
