Eli watched Sadie as she lay curled up, asleep already. It was early, barely eight o’clock, and she was already out. She had been the last few days. He thought it must be all the finishing touches for the wedding. They wanted to keep it simple, but he also wanted it to be right this time.

He still felt bad for the first time around. In his defense, though, they’d both thought it was just a contract then. Grabbing the knob on the drawer, he eased it open. Earlier, while Nettie was at the store, he’d asked her to pick up some chocolate bars. Sadie liked them when she was stressed.

He froze though when he saw what was in there. Picking it up gingerly, he studied it. Placing it back where he found it with the chocolate, he debated waking Sadie. No, if it was true, better to let her sleep and talk about it in the morning.

Crawling into bed next to her, he pulled her close, resting a hand on her stomach. Was it really true? He’d never considered it. It made sense, really. He’d never used a condom, which, in retrospect, was incredibly irresponsible. The thought that she might not be on a birth control hadn’t crossed his mind.

Why hadn’t she told him, though? Did she want the baby at all? He realized this wasn’t something they’d talked about. He hoped she wanted to keep it. Maybe it would be a little girl with her eyes. Quinn would have a playmate. The thought made him smile.

He drifted off to sleep, wondering what a child would be like and what arrangements they would need to make for it to work.
