Chapter Thirteen

"Working the plan, huh?" said Grizz.

"There were some unforeseen complications," said Keaton as he shut the door and ushered his two friends out.

Grizz and Mac had stared up at him in his towel while Brenda stood in her pajamas on the doorstep. Brenda had offered the men coffee while Keaton had thrown on his clothes. In that time, he knew his men had made up their own minds about what they had seen.

“She looks like a very complex set of curves a man could get lost in," said Mac.

"Hey." Keaton shoved the other man. Mac could’ve easily dodged the jab, but Keaton’s next words stopped him cold. "That's my wife you're talking about."

"Your wife?" both Mac and Grizz said in unison.

"Yeah." Keaton scrubbed his hand through his hair. His fingers caught in the strands. He was due for a cut soon.

"As in married?" asked Mac.

"Yeah,” said Keaton. He should probably find a barber in town. Or maybe there was someone next door at the Purple Heart Ranch who did buzz cuts. He’d rather have his hair cut by a soldier than someone he didn’t know.

"You been here less than forty-eight hours,” said Grizz. “Barely twenty-four.”

“And you’re not on the Purple Heart Ranch land where this kind of thing is expected,” said Mac.

"Like I said," shrugged Keaton, "there was a complication."

"That required a wife?" asked Grizz. His voice was more growl than anything.

Keaton would’ve expected the push back from Mac, who’d been eager to walk down the aisle since before he’d joined the service. Definitely from Rusty, who was separated from his wife, whom Keaton was sure the man was still in love with. He couldn’t understand why Grizz was giving him the push back.

"Yeah," said Keaton. “It’s the creek; it's not a part of the land deal with Banks. It belongs to Brenda – that's my wife. This is her land. But the only way we could get past all the restrictions to purchase the land and begin construction was if I was an owner. So, we decided the easiest way was to get married."

The two men stared at him. Mac’s mouth worked like he was trying to say something. But no actual words escaped his lips. Grizz simply glared, his nose wrinkled like he smelled something foul.

A door opening and slamming turned Keaton’s attention from his men. It was the back door to the house. They each turned to see Brenda, clad in form-fitting jeans, a tank top that hugged those curves Mac should not be noticing, and a cowboy hat on her head, jog down the backstairs. She tipped her hat to them all before heading toward the nearest barn.

Keaton forgot what he was saying as he watched her walk. The woman moved like she was a general, and all in her sight were under her command. Before she got too far away, Keaton saw her reach for something in her back pocket. She pulled out the memo pad. Tugging a pencil from the coils at the top of the pad, she began making marks.
