Chapter Nine

The next afternoon, Hal had her elbows propped on the table in the clinic, trying to work through the fight she'd had with John. He seemed so rigid. Was there any way for her to get him to bend the rules? She was her own person, No one, not even her husband was going to make decisions for her or speak for her.

Emma swished into the room and broke the silence. “It’s a perfect day for a ride. The buggy’s all ready to go. Come with me, Hallie.”

“Guess we could be gone for awhile. Doesn’t look like we’re needed around here.” Hal smiled at the girl and amended, “I’ll go providing you do the driving.”

Emma laughed. “I’d be glad to drive just so we get where we are going. I hear you like to drive the horse in circles. That would get us no where fast.”

“Very funny. No matter what your father told you, that was all the horse’s idea. I assure you,” Hal said as she climbed into the enclosed buggy. “Where are we going?”

“I thought we could go visit Roseanna Miller,” Emma said casually.

“Why?” Hal asked sharply.

Emma clucked to the horse and flicked the lines over his back to get him started. “It is the custom to visit a family that has lost a loved one as often as we can so they know they are not alone. I have not done that once yet. It is time that I did.”

“Looks to me like your father does enough visiting with Roseanna for the whole family,” cracked Hal, looking out her window.

“We feel sorry for Roseanna and her children.” With her eyes on the road, Emma chided, “We should show it.”

Knowing she wasn’t going to convince Emma to doubt her father, Hal gave in. “You are right as usual.”

A light gray spiral of smoke floated from the Miller chimney. The odor of fresh baked goods surrounded Emma and Hal as they stepped onto the porch. Emma knocked. Inside came the heavy thud of rushing footsteps on the hardwood floor.

With a big smile, Roseanna, in her widow’s black, welcomed Hal and Emma. “Welcome. It is so good to see you. We are working in the kitchen.”

She waited for them to hang their jackets on the wood rack pegs along the living room wall. Homemade throw rugs lay about on the living room’s hardwood floor. Some square, loom woven rugs and others were braided ovals. On the hard floor, the rugs made soft spots to walk on.

Jimmy and Ella, at the kitchen table, leaned over a big circle of rolled out dough. They looked up when the company came in. The children nodded bashfully at Hal, but they had big smiles for Emma.

Roseanna said, “We are making doughnuts today. Do not look too closely at my children. When they help me they are fershmeerd with flour.” She took up the end of her black apron and rubbed Ella’s flour covered cheeks.

Emma hugged Ella and patted Jimmy’s head. “Maybe they are as good to eat as the doughnuts.
