CHAPTER NINE

L ATER THAT MORNING Jill fielded a few work calls. It was all apology for disturbing her, but did she know where to find the Esperson file, or whether or not they were leaning toward one campaign or the other, because the client was jumpy. This was the regular ebb and flow in an advertising agency, but the constant flurry of busyness was jarringly different from the pace out here.

Somehow, those files, campaigns, the flow of creative sales pitches—as much as she loved it all, and as much as she fed off it when she was in Pittsburgh—felt strange out here in quiet Amish Country.

“Do you have your computer with you?” her colleague asked. “Could you just take a quick look at this pitch? I know you’re on vacation, but I’m trying to save this whole campaign!”

Jill shut her eyes. “I don’t have Wi-Fi, but we can talk it through. Okay...so you’re selling yoga gear aimed at a female buyer, and you want to show her wearing those yoga clothes doing other things besides yoga.”

“Exactly. We need a broader buying base, obviously.”

“What do you have so far?”

She looked up to see Thom watching her. He gave her a faint smile and turned away again, presumably to give her some privacy. She listened to her colleague’s ideas.

“Why not connect the yoga gear with a slower life, instead of a faster one?” Jill said. “Why not show an ability to relax connected to the clothing—steaming tea, a book laying open...wait, make it upside down, holding someone’s place. Show rain trickling down a window, and maybe a warm blanket wrapped around her shoulders while wearing the yoga clothes. That will appeal to every woman, not just the exercise buffs. It’s about comfort, relaxation and deep thoughts.”

“This is good. And a tag line?”

“Something like... Slow down in Rose Wear. Or, hear yourself think again in Rose Wear. It’s an intoxicating thought, being able to change your clothes and your ability to relax all at once. A mini vacation you can wear.”

“You’re golden! Thank you. I’m going to bring this to the team.”

“Good luck.” She hung up and looked over to see Thom watching her again.

“You’ve been answering emails for an hour,” he said. “Do they ever give you an actual rest?”

“It’s part of the job,” she said. “I don’t mind. I love what I do.”

“You just saved them there, didn’t you?”

“I had an idea. We’ll see what the team does with it,” she replied.

“You do realize that yoga outfits have nothing to do with peace of mind,” he said.

“Well...the idea is to connect the item with something less tangible that the person wants. You’re selling a feeling.”

“How do you do that?” he asked. “Where do your ideas come from?”

“It’s the fun of advertising! I don’t know. It just comes to me. All right, let’s use your business as an example.”

“Mine?” He looked a little uncomfortable now.

“If you were to hire me to put together a full ad campaign, I’d take a bunch of pictures of you with a tool belt and dirty hands.
