Åsa could see nothing at all. It was as if she were back in the dark valleys, though this was utter silence as well as utter darkness. At least the air was dry, and there was no drip of water as there had been in the valleys.

The floor was solid beneath the soft soles of her boots. Was it rock? She had no idea which way to go. She rose from the saddle and started walking. The necklace cast its faint, comforting light, but did little to illuminate her surroundings.

She walked for a long time, with no sense of how much time had passed. Was she going the right way? In this darkness, she could wander forever and never find her way out. With nothing to guide her, she was lost.

Was this like the dark valleys? If she kept going, would she finally come to the end?

A cold draft on her right cheek indicated a side passage. Should she take it? Åsa passed it by, but her nose bumped a hard surface. Pivoting, she retraced her steps to the side passage. After a few steps her nose found another rock wall. The passage branched again in both directions. The main passage had ended, and she was standing in a node with side channels.

Åsa stopped in confusion, not daring to proceed.
