Sammy Collins had definitely disappeared and not to return home to Ohio because his parents had called the Las Vegas police department and filed a missing person’s report after Sammy hadn’t gone home for Christmas. The investigation had been handled by a detective from the narcotics bureau.

“Why would narcotics handle a missing person?” Maria asked.

“I’ll call and find out,” Michael said.

The narcotics detective had handled the missing persons case because Sammy Collins was suspected of being a mule for a Mexican cartel. He’d made at least one and maybe as many as five trips south of the border in a rented RV. Sammy had never been caught with drugs in a car, but he’d been fingered by another mule who had been caught. The narcotics bureau was waiting for Sammy to rent another RV, so they could catch him in the act.

Instead, he disappeared.

When the detective went to his last known address, a new renter was already in the apartment, and the landlord told him that Sammy had just left one night and never returned. The landlord couldn’t even be sure of when Sammy had disappeared because he only noticed Sammy was gone when the rent wasn’t paid.

The narcotics detective couldn’t see why the cartel would kill Sammy. They hadn’t heard anything about Sammy stealing from anyone, and the cartels weren’t stupid. They didn’t kill a US citizen unless they had a damn good reason, but whatever had happened, Sammy hadn’t come back and by the time anyone was the wiser, he’d been gone so long that picking up the trail was next to impossible.

“What did he say about credit cards and bank accounts?” Maria asked.

“He said Sammy hadn’t used his card since early October, and the bank account had a few thousand in it, just sitting there,” Michael said.

“He’s definitely dead,” Maria said.

“Yeah, but I don’t really see how this has anything to do with us. Guys with cartel ties tend to disappear,” Michael said.

“But your friend didn’t think that,” Maria said.

“Who else can just make a guy disappear? He got stuck in a trunk and brought south of the border to never return.”

“Maybe, but the timing seems a little suspect, doesn’t it?” Maria said.

“Who gets killed over poker games? What is it, 1843?” Michael said.

“Let’s watch that show Kent mentioned. The one where Slate threatened to sue him,” Maria said.
