Chapter 23

Vivica

It was almost noon the day after Drake and I returned to the Mine when Agatha tore into my room and woke me up. Commander launched off the bed and greeted her.

I sat halfway up and rubbed my eyes. “Hey. Nice to see you.”

“Sorry.” She patted the dog’s head. “Couldn’t wait any longer.”

“What’s going on? Is Chad okay?”

She perched on the edge of my bed since she was short enough to fit in the little hollow without ducking. “He’s still weak, but they gave him massive doses of serum.” She clasped her hands. “It’s working. We got here a few hours before you and Drake.”

“Thank you, God,” I whispered, thankful for a bit of good news. “I need to eat. I’m not hungry, but I’m a little light-headed.” I got up and rested my hand on the rough wall to support myself.

We went down the passageway to the shared kitchenette where she started rummaging through cabinets. She removed a box of crackers and retrieved grapes and spray cheese from the refrigerator. “Looks like this is the best we can do.”

“I love spray cheese.” The edge of my mouth crept upward as I sat on a stool at the bistro table.

“No one loves spray cheese.”

I unwrapped a cracker and coated it with the yellow paste. “Hungry people do.” I popped it in my mouth. “I need every ounce of strength I can get.” I grabbed a bunch of grapes and told her about everything that had happened—including Navid’s offer.

“Wow. That’s a lot to take in.”

“No kidding.”

Agatha sat at the bar and leaned on the counter. “How’re things with Drake?”

My heart flopped. “Over. I told him we can’t work together anymore.”

“Why?” She frowned and lowered her voice.

“Singleness is best for me, and I don’t want to give Drake the wrong idea.”

“Really?” Agatha crossed her arms. “How is God leading you?”

“I don’t know.”

“That’s what I was afraid of. If you’ve surrendered your life to Christ, then shouldn’t he get a say in the matter?”

I opened my mouth to protest but clamped it shut.

“I almost lost the love of my life because I was being stubborn and not letting God lead me.” She stood. “I don’t want you to make the same mistake. If God’s will is that you stay single, I’m with you. But don’t use singleness as a cop out.” She paused and searched my face.

I examined the ingredients on the spray cheese. How had the government not outlawed it? Probably because the politicians had investments in the companies that produced it.

“Maybe God wants you with Drake.” Agatha lowered her voice. “Or someone else will come along. Either way? Don’t leave God out of this decision.” She stalked from the room and then turned back. “And so we’re clear, I am certain Navid isn’t God’s will, okay?”

I launched a cracker at her.
