Chapter 22

Kyle

It’s almost three o’clock in the afternoon when my phone rings in my pocket. The bouncing weight of it threatens to debag me as I jog around the open field at the back of our arena. The spring air is finally drawing it’s gun on the winter, forcing it out and making way for the sunshine to heat our bare skin. Coach has us running drills outside the second the temperature reaches circa 15 degrees celsius and as he leans back against the brick wall he’s standing in front of — eyes closed as he soaks up the tiny rays of sunshine — I duck out of the crowd and pull the phone from my tracksuit pants pocket. My own sunshine lights up my screen, her blonde waves hanging free and her toothy grin stopping my heartbeat in it’s tracks as always.

“Hey beautiful, to what do I owe the pleasure?” I grin, heart thumping and chest heaving from my run.

Molly clears her throat. “Hey Ky, I was just calling to let you know that I won’t be able to see you later. My mum and sister are coming to visit at 4pm, so I’ll be busy with them for a couple of hours. Sorry to cancel our plans, but my little sister wants to go skating in the park, so I won’t be free until late.”

“Oh, that’s ok Mol, don't worry.”

There’s a beat of silence between us and I can feel her nerves through the phone. She loves her family so much, but I know how anxious she gets when they want to visit her, thinking she has to be a false version of herself to make them happy. Which is fucking insane by the way, she’s perfect just the way she is, the real her. I think I'm one of the only people in her life that gets to see her totally uncovered, raw and real in every way because she's relaxed around me. She knows she can be herself and that’s the only version of her I ever want to see.

“You nervous?” I finally ask, as I take a seat on the slowly drying grass, the morning dew lingering on the tips of the blades. This weather is great, sun beginning to break through the clouds and give us a taste of the summer to come, but why is everything so fucking damp all the time?

I can hear Molly nibbling her finger, like she does when her stomach starts spinning. “Uh-huh, a little, I just…” she huffs a heavy sigh, “I haven’t seen them for months and I'm worried Ellie won’t remember me that much, she's only 3, so she's probably forgotten me already.”

“She won’t have forgotten you baby, she loves you, I'm sure you’re the best big sister ever.” I pick a few blades of grass out of the ground, plucking them apart between my fingers.

“I always wanted a sister, but when I finally got one I was already 18 and I didn’t really know what the hell to do with her,” Molly’s dry laugh beats in my ears.
