RAE

She hadn’t shown up for a goddamn week.

Eli had texted me to update me about her awakening but since then she hadn’t been to school, nor had anyone else. I tried to call Eli this morning, but she refused to answer the phone.

Marques’ threat weighed heavily on my mind since he last spoke to me.

Regain her trust, make her come back to you. She is hiding something, and it is your job to figure it out. Once you do, come back to me and I can ensure your family will remain unharmed.

I had known Rosie was hiding something, or at least we were getting close to figuring it out though what unfolded at my house only provided more questions than it did answers.

Even though my mind was plagued by thoughts of what this man could do to my mother and brothers…Rosie had been as prevalent as those thoughts. I wanted, no needed to know that she was safe. It wasn’t enough to hear it from Eli, I needed to check. Needed to see it with my own two eyes, feel it with my own two hands. I wanted nothing more than to lock her back up in my dorm and hide under the covers with her.

I didn’t realize the amount of chances I missed out on with her because I was so worried about my father and what the world would think. I had been so hung up on it while not knowing that her death was just mere months away.

I knew far too well that information had a price…but Rosie being that price was almost too much to bear and Marques knew that. That’s why he had made it so that I would have to choose the one thing that meant more to me than her.

My family.

At this point I could only pray that his intentions were purer than those of my parents, though I doubted it.

It was on the seventh day when I saw her again.

The morning was comfortable, with only a slight chill to it. A perfect day for an even more perfect surprise. I was about halfway from the dorms to the main campus building when I spotted Rosie being dragged across the quad by Malik. Eli, Daxton, and Amr walked behind them all watching carefully as Rosie kicked and hit Malik.

I could hear the yelling from my place in the quad and their emotions played at my senses. They were all varying degrees of annoyed, but Rosie’s anger far surpassed them all and hung over them like a menacing aura. I could also feel the restlessness of her magic, just like I had with Daxton, but now it was Daxton’s that was calm and Rosie’s that felt like a raging beast.

“Let go of me or I swear to god I will burn this entire campus down!”

Her voice was clear and unafraid, and it was my first clue that something had happened with her curse. My heart skipped a beat because I had never once heard it so loud and clear.
