The dinner was silent but far from awkward. If anything, I was amused off my ass. I was frustrated by the way my magic was lashing out, but seeing their twisted and pouting faces elicited a response in me similar to the one I got when Malik got angry.
I was in control here, even if it was just a tiny bit.
Rae was by far the most amusing. She had hidden everything up until now so wellâ¦but I saw the blush on her cheeks when I opened the door. She tried to act like it didnât bother her but the killing blow was when I told her I was bunking with her. I thought for sure she would drop dead right there.
I sat in a chair next to Rae happily while I ate the amazing food her family cook had made for us. I knew they were rich but the person they brought in had to be super expensive because every single bite of the food was like heaven.
âRosie,â Eli said while leaning forward. âWhat are you trying to do?â
I took another bite of my lamb and sneakily rested my hand on Raeâs thigh. Her whole body seemed to freeze under me.
âIâm trying to eat, Eli,â I said in a light voice, trailing my hand up her thigh.
âAre you trying to tempt us?â she asked in a voice almost low enough to be a growl.
âNot everything is about sex, Eli,â I told her.
âEverything a witch does is about sex,â Daxton said in a similar tone. It took me a good amount of effort not to freeze. Amr let out a meow from the floor, but I didnât pay him any mind.
âMust be hard for you then,â I said with a small pout.
âDonât play,â Eli hissed and stabbed her knife into the table. I blinked then turned to Rae.
âDid you guys go to another gathering?â I asked her. âNot sure why you are needed every day.â
She eyed me while she ate her own steak.
âYou donât need that information,â she replied.
Typical, yet smart, I wanted to say. And she was right to feel that way. Here I was playing house with them while they were none the wiser to my motives. Just minutes before they came home I was snooping in Daxtonâs room, but there was nothing inside. Not even a backpack.
This task almost seemed like I was set up for failure. They hadnât specified a timeline, but I needed to get this over with sooner rather than later and then wash my hands of that group and this curse. Maybe then, when I would be finally able to fully explain myself, they would forgive me for lying to them so blatantly.
âIâm tired,â I said with a sigh. âShow me to your room?â
Rae didnât respond, instead just nodded and stood up. Her food was barely touched.
âPlease donât try to break down my door tonight,â she said sternly to the others.
I followed her out of the room with a small burst of satisfaction. Amr padded after us, meowing lightly as we walked.
