Planning
In order to continue to do something, itâs important to plan. Planning requires thinking, so some people may think that itâs the opposite of what this book is saying, not to think. But by creating a plan at the outset and following it through, you will need to spend less time thinking about this, that and the other thing, which will have a positive effect on your mind and body.
For example, letâs say you were thinking about writing an email. Before you get started, you glimpse some interesting news story online and start reading â and before you know it, forty minutes have passed. You feel a little tired and go to the kitchen to make yourself a cup of coffee. After finishing your coffee, you come back to your computer irritated that you arenât following your schedule. You start writing your email, but you arenât in the right mood. Not only does it take longer to concentrate, but itâs also turning out to be a terrible email. Sound familiar?
Peopleâs moods can improve or worsen, depending on whether things are going as planned. Thatâs why itâs sensible to get started in exactly the way you want. But why is it that that doesnât always happen?
Itâs because of the presence of our desires. We delude ourselves into thinking that it will feel good to allow our desires to sway us. But, in reality, it will make us unable to do what we need to do, while the buzzing of our thoughts in our head will be telling us that we should be doing something else or remind us that we still havenât done that other task, and the total amount of pain will be magnified. To avoid this and to accomplish what you set out to do, I recommend the following exercise:
Take time to make a plan.
Be aware that you will end up feeling bad if you donât accomplish your plan.
Discipline yourself not to look at things that will get in the way of accomplishing your plan.
