He dropped a hundred-dollar bill in the manâs lap and said, âSo, do you have time to drive four very tired men down to the Regal?â
âUh, yeah. I guess I could do that. Itâll be a little tight. One of you can sit up front, of course.â
âSounds goodââ Robin glanced at the manâs identification card, which was affixed to the dashboard and featured the same neatly folded blue turban he was currently wearing. ââAshar. Weâll probably nap the whole way anyway. If thereâs still a decent hard rock station in this town, crank it up. That shitâs like a lullaby to me.â He peeled off his jacket and tossed it onto the backseat, being sure to open and close the door as loudly as possible. Twitch picked up on the ruse and went around to do the same with the two doors on the other side of the cab.
âYou got it, boss,â Ashar said, dutifully tuning the radio to KISW, which an instantly obnoxious deejay informed anyone within earshot was at 99.9 megahertz on the radio dial.
Robin gave the driver the okay sign and watched him turn his Orange Cab around and send it flying down the road. Strains of âSweet Child oâ Mineâ drifted from the cab, warped a little by the carâs increasing distance. About time for a classic hard rock station, Robin thought, feeling a little old.
âThis is a new path for the Portable Nine,â Abel said as they strolled in the direction the taxi had just gone off in. âOr should I say for the Portable Seven? Weâve never turned on our own before.â
âThey turned on us first,â Twitch was quick to point out.
âTrue enough,â said Abel, âbut there is one fact that none of this changes. Unity is our greatest strength. Weâre nothing scattered to the winds.
