She was too far away to see the features of the man walking on the road, but Theo was wearing a Chinese uniform and there was no mistaking that distinctive carefree stride. He was strolling toward Noyelles. Toward her. Camille walked a little faster and, when she knew there was no way he couldn’t have seen her, she waved.

She decided to pretend there was nothing amiss, that there hadn’t been any awkwardness from their last meeting.

“Good afternoon,” she called, “where are your men?”

“Cutting timber and milling duckboards,” he said, “something routine. And I have some clerical work to do at the camp. And you? Has the post office closed for the summer?”

“Madame Dumont let me out early,” she said, pleased at the teasing tone in his voice. He wasn’t upset with her. “I plan to finish your portrait very soon. Would you be able to meet the day after tomorrow and see it? The usual time?”

“I would be delighted. I’ve missed our chats.”

And though she tried hard not to read too much into Theo’s words, they made her heart race.
