TWENTY-FIVE

ANNA

Helmut’s attitude changed significantly. Now he visits my café almost every day making sure that other men don’t go as far as even glancing at me. He keeps introducing me to his work friends as his beloved wife causing my stomach to twist every time he does it. But I pretend because I know how dangerous he is.

It seems he’s had more to drink tonight than usual because at midnight he still remains at his chair, sipping brandy and watching me. Everyone else has gone.

I yawn. “I’m tired. Hope you don’t mind if I close my café?”

He grins. “Of course, darling. Lock the door and let’s go upstairs.”

The moment he says it, the strong need to punch him grows in me. I close my eyes and try to reason with him. “Please, Helmut, do not complicate things. You need to get some sleep too.” I put pressure on my last words. “In your own home.”

“It’s absurd. You’re rightfully my wife and I’m the only man entitled to sleep in your bed.”

I bite my lip but adopt a calm tone of voice. “You know very well that this marriage is only on paper. You made your choice to love another woman a long time ago. You didn’t want me from the beginning and you treated me horribly, so don’t lie now either.”

“You don’t know me at all. In fact, you don’t even try to get to know me. You’ve already judged me as a bad guy and you don’t care to know why I’m the way I am.”

His unexpected words stun me. Are there tears in his eyes? Why is he doing this? Why is he playing games with me? We both know he can force me to take him upstairs, and if I disagree, he can easily drag me to Szucha where I would be doomed. So why does he pretend to be in such pain instead? I don’t believe a word he says. “I’m just tired. I’ve had a long day.”

“Yes, I didn’t want you because I loved someone else. I loved the woman that was forbidden to me, first by my own father who threatened to disinherit me if I married her, and then the war took her away. I tried protecting her despite it all, and in the end I have, though she can never be mine.” He rises and kneels before me. “You are the one that rightfully deserves to stand by my side, and you must accept it. I just want you to know.”

“Why are you telling me all of this?” I can’t listen to this. It’s all pretend. Obviously, he doesn’t want to force me to go back to him. He wants to fool me into believing he’s changed, but I know better.

“Because you must understand that I don’t want to hurt you anymore.”

“Then just leave me alone,” I say, expecting his anger but there is no reaction.

His gaze is absent now as he stares into the air. “Through my years of growing up,
